Strategic Goals & Vision

Aligned with the broader Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) strategic plan, Forming Lives to Enrich the World, the Vision for Engagement focuses on building a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student is actively connected to their learning community.

  • Belonging & Connectedness: Ensuring every student feels known, valued, and safe within a faith-filled Catholic environment.

  • Active Participation: Fostering high levels of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement to maximise learning potential.

Key Foundations & Principles

The framework brings together evidence-based behavioral science, wellbeing research, and Catholic social teaching:

  • Inherent Dignity of the Person: Rooted in Catholic principles, every student is recognized as being created in the image of God, deserving of respectful, nurturing, and compassionate relationships.

  • Relational Pedagogy: Strong, positive relationships between teachers, students, parents, and parishes serve as the anchor for student engagement and growth.

  • Cognitive & Behavioral Alignment: Positive engagement directly enables effective learning; when students feel secure and supported, cognitive load is reduced, allowing for deeper learning and academic success.

  • Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS): Providing universal proactive supports for all students, alongside targeted and intensive interventions for those who need additional support.

Core Pillars of the Engagement Model

The Vision for Engagement centers on three interconnected domains:

  1. Behavioral Engagement: Promoting clear, consistent expectations, positive behavior support systems, and structured routines across all learning spaces.

  2. Emotional Engagement: Building strong relationships, a sense of belonging, and emotional self-regulation to foster positive attitudes toward school and learning.

  3. Cognitive Engagement: Encouraging student agency, goal setting, self-efficacy, and active investment in mastering complex skills and ideas.

Implementation Framework

We put the Vision for Engagement into practice through a collaborative and proactive process:

  • Clear Expectations (Set the Standard): Establishing high, transparent behavioral and academic expectations across the whole school.

  • Proactive Support (Teach & Model): Explicitly teaching positive social, emotional, and behavioral skills alongside academic content.

  • Timely Intervention (Respond & Scaffolding): Utilising data-informed, compassionate strategies to support students displaying signs of disengagement or difficulty.

  • Continuous Partnership (Home & Community): Engaging parents as key partners in supporting their child’s engagement, attendance, and wellbeing.
